Are Paper Books, Magazines and Newspapers Doomed to Disappear? Question by Bird of Paradise: Are paper books, magazines and newspapers doomed to disappear?
Today, I read on the newspaper that in 20 years, paper books, magazines and newspapers may no longer exist, and we might permanently have already entered the multimedia era by then (and even if that hadn’t happened by then yet, they assure that sooner or later this will happen).
Despite my loving the Internet, I think I will miss reading a paper book at bed, on the beach or on a plane.
I must say I almost don’t read newspapers and magazines anymore, but I think I would the disappearance of glossy magazines a loss as well…
Will things be like this in the future? (Will paper books, magazines and newspapers be relics from the past in a few years from now?…)

you’ll actually find that more printed works are bought, read and distributed than ever before – what will change especially for the media is that they will become more specialised and focus on meeting the demands of a target market

I sincerely hope not!
I have loved books since even bofore I could read {when people read to me}. The joy of walking into a bookshop, looking at the vast array of titles, admiring the cover art, and finally picking one {or several!} to buy is something that would be greatly missed.
On the bus in the morning is my current book reading time {that and in the bathroom!}, and I’m currently on my 6th Jasper Fforde book ~ mornings are so much fun!
I also enjoy buying my daily newspaper, taking it home, and having to spread it out on the floor to read it {I never could get the hang of reading broadsheets the way people on trains do}.
And the idea of no magazines?! I’m always finding beautiful pictures to cut out and add to my scrapbooks.
If people in this world have any sense, we will never stop making these things. Of course, more sustainable alternatives may need to be found, but I’m sure we can manage that!

“They” have been making these predictions for decades. In the 1950s television was supposed to replace radio. I believe it was the 80s that brought us the term “paperless office,” though the concept is older. (For more on this, you might want to check into Sellen and Harper’s book ‘The Myth of the Paperless Office.’)
I remember when “they” were predicting that this new thing called the World Wide Web was going to replace all current forms of communication. Books were supposed to go away in 10 years time. That was about 15 years ago, and the publishing industry is still going strong.
Back in May of this year the Association of American Publishers (AAP) published their annual report on book sales in the U.S. Overall, sales are growing by 3.7% each year. The AAP summarized the report in a press release available from their website at: http://www.publishers.org/main/presscenter/2006BookSales.htm
If you are interested in reading the full report, you can find it on the AAP website at: http://www.publishers.org/main/presscenter/documents/S12006FINAL.pdf
